If you have an amd pc read https //answerbase/my-scarlett-interface-is-having-problems-functioning-on-my-computer-that-has-an-amd Make sure that you are setting the gain/volume correctly, have the right input set, have the solo set as the default or recording device in windows or in your recording program and that you have the 48v power button on.

if you do not plan to use the bundled software for recording and instead use something else you can ignore the parts about their software and just refer to the on-device settings.
